Its not so easy to get around Valley Isle without proper transportation. Hawaiis second largest island may look diminutive on a map, but dont let its small dimensions fool you. There is enough geographic diversity here, and enough treasures tucked in hard-to-reach places, that you will probably want a car for the duration of your stay.

Hawaii is unique in many ways, and transit around and among the islands in no exception. At 728 square miles, Maui manages to pack in everything from snorkeling to soccer to absolutely stunning mountain vistas. Driving anywhere on the island takes a good eye and a keen command of the many local customs related to automobiles.

Drive
Whether you are driving mauka or makai (toward the mountain or toward the sea), you will want to look out for red and yellow signs along the islands roadways. These tend to mark landmarks big and small, and offer unplanned adventures for those travelers whose minds are open to new things. You may also want to watch out for cyclists, who seem to crowd roadways more and more every year.

Finally you will probably want to get a good rate on the rental itself. Compacts are usually available for around $30 a day, and you can get a full size or SUV for about twice that. If you want the best prices and a reliable vehicle, you may want to stick with the companies that earn accolades from locals and travel agents.
